Euro 2024 – Netherlands vs Poland | Match Info, Preview & Lineup

Euro 2024’s Group D kicks off with Poland facing the Netherlands at Hamburg’s Volksparkstadion on Sunday. Poland barely made it to the finals through a nerve-wracking playoff, while the Netherlands cruised through qualification and are aiming for their second European title.

Poland will miss their star forward Robert Lewandowski, who is their top scorer at the Euros with five of their 11 goals. Juventus striker Arkadiusz Milik is also out with a knee injury, adding to his run of bad luck.

Lewandowski just returned to individual training and might be available for next week’s matches. This leaves coach Michal Probierz needing to adjust his attack. Karol Swiderski is back in shape after an ankle injury and might play as a ‘false nine,’ or the more traditional options of Adam Buksa or Krzysztof Piatek could lead the line.

Several Serie A players are in the mix for Sunday’s game. Bologna’s 19-year-old winger Kacper Urbanski might get a chance, Hellas Verona defender Pawel Dawidowicz is hopeful of recovering from injury, and Wojciech Szczesny from Juventus will be in goal. Inter Milan-bound Piotr Zielinski will command the midfield and wear the captain’s armband in Lewandowski’s absence.

On the Dutch side, Memphis Depay is expected to be the lone striker, though Wout Weghorst is also an option. Ajax forward Brian Brobbey is sidelined with a hamstring strain. With Frenkie de Jong out due to an ankle injury, along with Atalanta BC’s Marten De Roon and Teun Koopmeiners, full-back Ian Maatsen has been called up. Nathan Ake or Micky van de Ven will likely start on the left side of defense.

With many midfield absences, PSV’s Joey Veerman and Jerdy Schouten might partner up in the middle, pushing Georginio Wijnaldum to the bench. Denzel Dumfries, who had five assists during Euro 2024 qualifying—second only to Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes—will play on the right flank, competing with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong for the spot.
